Leave a Legacy That Lasts: QCDs and the Eberhardt Society

At Michigan Lutheran Seminary, we are blessed to stand on the foundation laid by faithful supporters of the gospel. One remarkable example is Pastor Christoph Eberhardt and his wife Mary, who donated the land on which MLS still stands. Their vision for Lutheran education was a gift not just for their time, but for generations to come. Today, students continue to grow in faith and prepare for service in the Church thanks to their foresight and generosity.

The Eberhardts’ story is a powerful reminder that good stewardship can leave a lasting impact. Inspired by this spirit, the MLS Foundation established the Eberhardt Society—a community of men and women who include MLS or the MLS Foundation in their estate plans. Membership in the Eberhardt Society is a way to encourage others to practice thoughtful stewardship while ensuring that Lutheran education continues to thrive.

One meaningful way to join the Eberhardt Society is through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA. If you are 70½ or older, a QCD allows you to:

  • Give directly from your IRA to the MLS Foundation,

  • Count the gift toward your required minimum distribution (RMD), and

  • Avoid paying income taxes on the amount transferred.

QCDs are a simple, tax-smart way to make a lasting difference in the lives of future pastors, teachers, and Christian leaders. Combined with estate planning, they are a powerful tool for leaving a legacy that honors Christ and blesses the church.

If you are interested in learning more about QCDs or joining the Eberhardt Society, the MLS Foundation offers Christian consultation to guide you. (Please note: this guidance is not a substitute for the advice of a licensed financial advisor.)

Your legacy can continue the work the Eberhardts began—passing on the gospel for generations to come.
